System requirements

What you will do

Check that the Windows server (or office PC) you want to protect can run Prixl Warden, and that it can reach Prixl over the internet, before you start the installer. If your IT vendor manages the server, send them this page.

Time: about 5 minutes. You need: access to the server with an administrator account.

Windows version

  • Supported: Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server 2016 or newer, 64-bit. The installer is a 64-bit MSI.
  • Not supported: Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. The installer does not stop you on these systems: it completes, but the Warden service then fails to start and the dashboard shortcut does not open. Do not install on them.
  • Anything else older than Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016 is outside the supported list. If you need to protect such a server, use the contact form before you try.

To see which version you have, press the Windows key and R together, type winver and press Enter.

Rights on the server

  • You install with an administrator account. The Warden service itself runs in the background as the Windows system account, so it keeps working when nobody is signed in.
  • Opening the Warden dashboard also needs administrator rights. Windows usually shows a permission prompt (UAC) when you open it from the desktop shortcut.

Network

  • The server must be able to make outgoing HTTPS connections (port 443) to api.warden.prixl.io (sign-in to your organisation, licence, alerts, heartbeat) and downloads.prixl.io (updates). If your firewall or proxy filters outgoing traffic, allow both.
  • No incoming ports have to be opened for monitoring. The dashboard runs on the server itself and cannot be reached from other computers.
  • Prixl Guard (Secure Access) is optional. Its default connection method, “Prixl Magic”, needs no router set-up and no static IP. “Classic Static IP” is only for servers with a real public IP address and UDP port 51820 forwarded to them. Details are in How Guard works.

Software on the server

  • Browser: Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. The dashboard does not work in Internet Explorer; if Internet Explorer opens, the page tells you to paste the address into Edge or Chrome.
  • Windows PowerShell 5.1: the installer uses it for a few set-up steps. It is part of every supported Windows version.
  • Windows Firewall and the Security event log: Warden reads the Security event log, turns on Windows sign-in auditing (“Logon/Logoff”) and firewall logging of dropped connections, and manages firewall rules when you ask it to block an address or restrict a port. The dashboard lists these changes the first time you open it.

Email

  • An inbox you read every day. The address you sign up with becomes the first alert recipient. The trial allows one recipient; paid plans allow more.
  • Add these senders to your safe-senders list so Warden’s mail does not land in spam: [email protected] (sign-up and welcome), [email protected] (alerts and summaries) and [email protected] (update notices).
  • Scheduled emails go out on Indian Standard Time: the daily digest at 18:00 IST and the weekly summary on Mondays at 08:00 IST.

Disk space, memory and processor

We have not published minimum disk, memory or processor figures. If the server is very small or already heavily loaded, use the contact form before you install.

Check you are ready

  • winver shows Windows 10, Windows 11, or Windows Server 2016 or newer.
  • You can sign in to the server as an administrator.
  • From the server, a browser can open prixl.io (a quick sign that outgoing HTTPS works).
  • Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome is installed on the server.
  • The Prixl sender addresses are on your safe-senders list.

If something goes wrong

  • The server runs Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2: Warden will not run there. Plan to move the workload to a supported Windows version first.
  • Your firewall blocks outgoing traffic by default: ask whoever manages it to allow HTTPS to api.warden.prixl.io and downloads.prixl.io.
  • Not sure whether your setup fits? See Troubleshooting Warden or use the contact form.
