Prixl Guard (Secure Access) guides

Prixl Guard gives your staff a private, encrypted route to the office server, so Remote Desktop no longer has to be open to the whole internet. In the Warden dashboard it lives on the Secure Access tab, which is why you will see both names. These guides cover setting it up, inviting staff, locking Remote Desktop safely and fixing the usual problems.

Guard is included in the Warden + Guard plan; the dashboard calls this the Business Guard plan (see pricing). If you have not installed Warden on the server yet, start with the Prixl Warden guides. For an overview of the product, see the Prixl Guard page.

For the office admin

Follow these in order the first time. Each one takes a few minutes.

  1. How Guard works: connection methods, network needs, security. Read this first if you want to know what Guard changes on your server and network.
  2. Set up Secure Access on your server. Check your plan, open the Secure Access tab and confirm the server is ready.
  3. Invite a staff member. Create a one-time invite code for each person.
  4. Lock Remote Desktop to Secure Access only (without locking yourself out). Do this only after at least one person has connected through Guard.
  5. Revoke access, replace a laptop, re-invite. What to do when someone leaves or changes their PC.
  6. Change the connection method (Prixl Magic or Classic Static IP). Most offices never need to touch this.

For staff

Send your staff this page. It is written for people who are not technical and it prints on a few sheets of paper: For staff: install Guard and connect to the office server.

When something does not work

Troubleshooting Guard lists the error messages you may see in the Guard app and the dashboard, what each one means and what to do. If your problem is not there, use the contact form.

Before you start: what Guard needs

  • Prixl Warden installed on the office server, on the Warden + Guard plan (shown in the dashboard as the Business Guard plan).
  • Staff on a Windows 64-bit PC or laptop. There is no Mac, iPhone or Android app today.
  • Windows administrator rights on each staff PC to install the app (your IT person can do this).
  • No static IP and no router changes with the default connection method, Prixl Magic.
