Set working hours, recipients and which alerts you get

What you will do: tell Warden your real office hours so that sign-ins outside them are emailed to you, choose which alert categories you want, add the people who should receive alerts, and decide whether you want the daily digest and the Monday reports. Everything on this page is on the Settings tab of the Warden dashboard.

Time: about 10 minutes, plus a few minutes for each new recipient to verify their address.
You need: an administrator account on the server; your office opening hours and working days; for each new recipient, access to their mailbox and to the mailbox of someone who already receives Warden alerts.

Why working hours matter

Until you save your own hours, Warden uses default hours (9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday to Friday). In that state, sign-ins outside those hours are recorded but not emailed. The dashboard shows a yellow banner, “Set your working hours.”, until you save. Saving your real hours is what turns odd-hour alerts on.

Steps

Set your working hours

  1. On the server, double-click the Prixl Warden Dashboard icon on the desktop and click Yes at the Windows permission prompt.
  2. If the yellow “Set your working hours.” banner is showing, click Set Hours. Otherwise click Settings in the left-hand menu.
  3. Under Working Hours, choose your opening time in Start Time and your closing time in End Time. Both lists go in 30-minute steps.
  4. Under Working Days, click each day to switch it on or off. Monday to Friday are on at first; if your office works on Saturdays, for example during tax season, click Sat.
  5. Look at Timezone. It cannot be changed here: it shows the server’s own time zone, marked “(server)”. Your hours are read in that time zone, so if the server’s clock is set to a different zone from your office, ask your IT vendor to correct the server first.
  6. Scroll down past Notification Categories and click Save Settings. You should see “Settings saved”.

Choose which alert categories you get

  1. Under Notification Categories, note the two rows marked Always On: Brute-force alerts and Security audit. These cannot be muted.
  2. Switch off any of these you do not want emails for: Odd-hour logon alerts, Account change alerts, New service installed, Audit log cleared. All four are on at first. We suggest leaving them on unless one of them is regularly sending you emails about routine work.
  3. Leave Alert on LAN / private-IP brute-force attempts off unless your IT vendor asks for it. It is off at first.
  4. Click Save Settings.

Add or remove alert recipients

  1. Under Alert Recipients, check the limit shown in the description. The free trial allows one address; paid plans allow more.
  2. Type the new address in the Enter email address box and click Add. The address appears with “awaiting verification” and an expiry time.
  3. Ask the new recipient to open the Warden email whose subject ends “Verify your email address” (heading “Verify Your Email”) and click the link in it.
  4. An existing recipient receives an email headed “Approve New Recipient”, with the new address in the subject. They must click its link too. Both links have to be clicked within 48 hours.
  5. To stop someone receiving alerts, click Remove next to their address. To withdraw an invitation that has not been verified yet, click Cancel.

Turn the daily digest or weekly reports on or off

  1. Find Regular Summaries further down the Settings tab.
  2. Read what each switch does before you turn it off. Daily digest is “An evening email summarising the day. When off, alerts that are normally listed only in the digest, such as repeated sign-in attacks and newly installed services, are not emailed at all.” Weekly reports is “Monday’s security summary and user activity report. When off, findings reported only weekly, such as warnings that protection is degraded, are not emailed at all.”
  3. Click the switch to change it.

These two switches apply to your whole organisation, on every server, and every alert recipient is emailed about each change. Urgent alerts, such as a cleared security log, are still emailed immediately whatever the switches are set to. We recommend leaving both on: some findings only ever appear in the digest or the weekly report.

Check it worked

  • The yellow “Set your working hours.” banner has gone, and the note under Working Hours about default hours no longer shows.
  • Warden emails the alert recipients about each dashboard change, with a subject such as “[Prixl Warden] Notification Settings Changed on” followed by the server name. Changes to recipients are reported as “Admin Email Changed”.
  • On the Overview tab, the card Admin Emails (alerts go here) lists the addresses that are active.
  • A new recipient no longer shows “awaiting verification” in Alert Recipients.

If something goes wrong

  • The verification email has not arrived: ask the recipient to check spam or junk. If the 48 hours have passed, click Cancel next to the pending address and try adding it again. If that does not work, contact support through the contact form.
  • Odd-hour sign-ins are not being emailed: check that your hours were saved (no yellow banner) and that Odd-hour logon alerts is switched on.
  • You cannot see Regular Summaries: contact support through the contact form.
  • For emails that do not arrive at all, see Troubleshooting Warden.
